When it first launched in May of 1984, the 4Runner was Toyota’s second SUV for the U.S., following the Land Cruiser. Its connection to the pickup truck was so obvious it basically looked like a pickup with a cap on the back. It was two-door, and base models didn’t even have a second row of seats. Simple and tough, the model was a hit. In 1990, the second-generation model gained a second set of doors, setting the blueprint for all 4Runners thereafter. Now, 40 years after its launch, a completely redesigned 6th generation 4Runner comes. Like all previous 4Runners, its mechanics are derived from the Tacoma. However, given Toyota’s extensive SUV and crossover lineup, the 4Runner is free to focus on its truck-based strengths of off-road ability and towing more than ever.
The 2025 4Runner’s twelve grades include SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, TRD Off-Road i-FORCE MAX, TRD Off-Road Premium i-FORCE MAX, Platinum, Trailhunter, and TRD Pro. The Trailhunter and TRD Pro comprise dual off-road flagships for the model line. The new Trailhunter grade focuses on the overlanding form of off-roading, including crawling over very rough terrain, while the TRD Pro is designed specifically for fast running on non-paved surfaces. Specific prices and feature lists for each grade have yet to be announced.
