2025 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro Mudbath muddy water

Starting MSRP: $40,770*
Up to 326 Horsepower
Up to 465 Lb-ft of Torque
Up to 6,000 Lb Towing Capacity

When it first launched in May of 1984, the 4Runner was Toyota’s second SUV for the U.S., following the Land Cruiser. Its connection to the pickup truck was so obvious it basically looked like a pickup with a cap on the back. It was two-door, and base models didn’t even have a second row of seats. Simple and tough, the model was a hit. In 1990, the second-generation model gained a second set of doors, setting the blueprint for all 4Runners thereafter. Now, 40 years after its launch, a completely redesigned 6th generation 4Runner comes. Like all previous 4Runners, its mechanics are derived from the Tacoma. However, given Toyota’s extensive SUV and crossover lineup, the 4Runner is free to focus on its truck-based strengths of off-road ability and towing more than ever.

Performance

Turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-4 engines power the 4Runner lineup, including a hybrid powertrain for the first time. The strictly gas-powered i-Force engine produces 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque, both figures exceeding the 4.0-liter V6 from the previous generation. It is combined with an 8-speed transmission, which replaces the 5-speed transmission of the previous model.

The 4Runner i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain is focused on increasing power. It combines the turbocharged 2.4-liter engine with a 48-horsepower electric motor feeding from a 1.87-kWh nickel–metal hydride battery for a total powertrain output of 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque, which is by far the most potent powertrain ever offered in a 4Runner. It is connected to the same 8-speed transmission.

The 4Runner chassis is tougher than ever. New to the 4Runner, the available Stabilizer Bar Disconnect system is up front, featuring a combination of a double-wishbone independent front suspension and a five-link, coil-sprung solid rear axle. Because the stabilizer bar so effectively mitigates body roll on highway curves but can hamper wheel articulation off-road, this system allows you to disconnect it at the push of a button. The Multi-terrain system can adjust throttle, transmission, and traction control logic for specific types of terrain and now works in both 4WD-High and 4WD-Low.

The model line includes 2WD, part-time 4WD, and Full-time 4WD. 2WD models are equipped with an automatic limited-slip differential, and all four-wheel-drive models have an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range, Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), and an automatic limited-slip differential. The more off-road-focused grades of TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter all include an electronic locking rear differential, dampers, and other hardware specific to their mission. Available in Limited and standard on Platinum grades, is a full-time four-wheel-drive system with a center locking differential on i-FORCE MAX models.

Exterior

A Michigan-based CALTY design team created the 2025 4Runner’s artful blend of the current Tacoma and traditional 4Runner styling cues. Inspired by desert racing, the overall look is rugged with refined details. Details can vary considerably among the nine mission-specific grades. The raised rear quarter windows that wrap onto the roof are a nod to the first and second-generation designs, and the opening window on the tailgate has been retained.

Interior

The 4Runner dashboard will appear familiar to anyone who is well-acquainted with the new Tacoma. Storage spaces are abundant and within easy reach of the driver. The optional third-row seat comes in handy when a trip complement exceeds five. The 4Runner is not a convertible, but dropping all side windows, the tailgate window, and opening the sunroof can get you close.

Technology

The new 4Runner design features major leaps in available cabin technology. An 8.0-inch infotainment display is found on the entry grades. Using Toyota’s latest software, the system is intuitive and responds quickly. All models come with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, USB-C ports, and a digital key system that lets you lock, unlock, and start the 4Runner via a smartphone app. Upper-level grades feature a large 14.0-inch display and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster for the driver is also available. A wireless smartphone charging pad is an available option.

Safety and Driver Assistance

All 4Runners come standard with the latest version of the Toyota Safety Sense, TSS 3.0. This suite of safety and driver assistance technology includes:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Road Sign Assist
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Proactive Driving Assist (PDA)

The PDA system detects pedestrians and cyclists in intersections and applies braking if necessary. The system can also apply gentle braking in curves when Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is used.

Also available is a blind spot monitoring system to help detect vehicles behind you in adjacent lanes and a Rear Cross-Traffic alert to warn you of approaching vehicles when backing out of a parking space.
