2026 Toyota Camry vs. the Competition

As rivalries go, the Celtics versus the Lakers has nothing on Camry versus Accord. Each is the other’s biggest competitor and the target vehicle when each company develops its next generation. The Accord offers a mix of hybrid and non-electrified models. Its two lowest trim levels are powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four, while the top five use a hybrid system with a 2.0-liter engine and two motors. Unlike Toyota’s hybrid system, the Accord’s system primarily uses the engine to generate electricity for the electric motors, powering the wheels directly only at steady highway speeds. With this design, the Accord has no transmission. 

• The Accord is unavailable with AWD.
• The base Camry costs about a thousand dollars more than the base Accord yet delivers a combined 51 MPG, compared with just 32 for the base Accord.
• The base Camry also has 225 horsepower, compared with 192 for the non-electrified Accord models.
• The Camry’s 225 horsepower is also higher than the Accord Hybrid’s combined horsepower of 204.
• Compared with the Accord hybrid drivetrain, a price-comparable Camry gets 47 MPG in the city, compared with 46 for the Accord. The difference is even greater on the highway, with the Camry rated at 45 MPG and the Accord at 41. The Camry edges out the Accord in the combined figure (46 MPG vs. 44).
• The cabin room in these vehicles is very similar. The Accord has a little more rear legroom, but hip, shoulder, and rear headroom are all within an inch of each other.
• Niceties such as heated seats, a heated steering wheel, a sunroof, and satellite radio are available on more Camry trims than on the Accord.
• On base models, the Camry offers the versatility of 60/40 split rear seatbacks, whereas the Accord has a one-piece folding rear seatback.
• An eight-way power driver’s seat is available on the base Camry trim, but getting that on the Accord requires a trim upgrade for a power driver’s seat.
• The Camry earned a TOP SAFETY PICK + designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Accord’s TOP SAFETY PICK designation is one step down because its front crash prevention system received a lower rating.
• The Camry offers two years or 25,000 miles of complimentary scheduled maintenance, whereas the Accord offers only the first scheduled maintenance visit as complimentary within one year or 12,000 miles.

Kia’s midsize sedan adopted the K5 name with its fifth generation, which debuted in 2021. Before that, it was known as the Optima, which first went on sale in the United States 26 years ago. Positioned as the sportier of the two mainstream brands under the Hyundai Motor Group, the K5 does not offer a hybrid model. Instead, it features a 2.5-liter inline-4 producing 191 horsepower. The GT model features a 290-horsepower turbocharged version of the same engine. While primarily front-wheel drive (FWD), the K5 offers optional AWD on the GT-Line trim, though the high-powered GT remains FWD only.

• AWD is available on all Camry trim levels. On the K5, it is limited to the GT-Line trim.
• The K5 has 191 horsepower compared to 225 for the Camry when comparing base powertrains. 
• Unsurprisingly, the Camry drivetrain has much better EPA-estimated ratings, up to 53/50/51 MPG city/ highway/ combined, compared with the K5’s 26/37/30 MPG for FWD models. 
• The K5 GT, with its 290-hp engine, definitely outpowers the Camry, but at the cost of fuel economy, with ratings of 23/33/27 MPG city/ highway/ combined. The Camry’s lowest mileage is 44/43/44 MPG on the XSE AWD model.
• Rear passengers will enjoy notably more legroom in the Camry (38.0 inches vs. 35.2) as well as more hip room (54.6 inches vs. 51.9).
• The Camry earned a TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation from IIHS. The K5 earned no accolade from IIHS, primarily due to poorer results in the front moderate overlap and side impact tests. 
• The Camry enjoys considerably higher resale value, retaining on average 65.7% of its value after five years, compared with 54% for the K5.

Hyundai introduced the Sonata in the US as a 1989 model, three years after the Hyundai brand debuted in the country. The model is now in its eighth generation, which dates back to 2020, with a redesigned front end for the 2024 model year. The Sonata shares its platform and basic drivetrains with the Kia K5, though the models share no exterior or interior designs. As such, most models are powered by a 191-horsepower 2.5-liter inline-4, mated to an 8-speed transmission. The Sonata also features a hybrid drivetrain using a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle engine combined with Hyundai’s hybrid system. This is available on the SEL and Limited trim levels. The Sonata also shares the K5’s turbocharged 2.5-liter engine, which is good for 290 horsepower.  

• AWD is available on all Camry trim levels. However, you cannot combine AWD with a hybrid drivetrain on the Sonata.
• Hybrid Sonata trims are limited to the Blue, SEL, and Limited model lines. At $29,200, the Blue trim is priced very close to the Camry’s $29,300 starting MSRP.
• The Sonata Hybrid has 192 horsepower, compared with 225 for the Camry.
• The Camry and Sonata Hybrid drivetrains trade fuel mileage advantages.  The Camry is better in the city (52 MPG vs. 47) while Sonata has the advantage on the highway (49 / 56).  Both share a combined rating of 51 MPG.
• Rear passengers will enjoy notably more legroom in the Camry (38.0 vs. 34.8inches).
• Both the Camry and Sonata earned a TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation from IIHS and an Overall 5-Star rating from the NHTSA.
• Camry enjoys considerably higher resale value, retaining on average 65.7% of its value after five years compared to 54% for the Sonata.

Nissan is the brand most committed to the sedan body style, with three sedans in its product line, now topped by the Altima. The Altima replaced the Stanza name in the 1993 model year and is now in its sixth design generation, which launched with the 2019 model year. All Altima models are powered by naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-four engines that produce anywhere between 182 and 188 horsepower, depending on trim. The engine is paired with a continuously variable transmission. A hybrid drivetrain is not available. The base SL model is FWD only, but AWD is available on the SV and SR trim levels. 

• The Altima has no hybrid drivetrain.
• When comparing base FWD models, the Camry outperforms the Altima, with 225 horsepower compared with the Altima’s 188. 
• The Camry’s horsepower advantage extends to AWD models, with 232 for the Camry compared to 182 for the Altima.
• With its standard Hybrid drivetrain, the Camry is significantly more efficient than any Altima model. The base Camry has city/highway/combined ratings of 52/49/51 MPG, compared with 25/36/30 MPG for the base Altima.
• The fuel mileage comparison for AWD models is 51/49/50 MPG for the Camry and 25/33/28 MPG for the Altima.
• The Camry provides almost three more inches of legroom for rear passengers (38.0 vs. 35.2 inches).
• The Camry starts with an 8.0-inch center touchscreen, compared with the 7.0-inch screen on the base Altima. 
• The Camry earned IIHS’s TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation, the highest. The Altima earned no accolade from IIHS due to a “Marginal” rating in the moderate overlap front impact test and a “Poor” rating in the side impact test.
• Driver assistance technologies such as adaptive cruise control and lane centering are standard across all Camry models but require an upgrade on the Altima. 
• According to the resale experts at ALG, the Camry has a considerably higher resale value than the Altima.
