2026 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid

Performance 

The Prius PHEV features a 2.0-liter inline-4 Dynamic Force engine with dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) and variable valve timing, producing 150 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque. The Toyota hybrid system combines this with a 161-horsepower motor (120kW) that draws power from a 13.6 kWh battery. The system uses a continuously variable transmission and drives the front wheels. The combined horsepower is 220, which is quite strong for a car of the Prius’ size. 

Fully charged, the Prius PHEV can operate in EV mode for approximately 45 miles on the SE grade and 40 miles for higher grades. This saves money, as electric power is much less expensive than gasoline for the same distance. 

Along with its slick exterior, it delivers 48–52 mpg combined, depending on the grade. You can also choose how your Prius PHEV operates. If you’re on a long trip but prefer EV mode in the city, you can select Hybrid for highway driving and conserve the EV miles for later. With a full charge and full tank, you can expect around 550 to 600 miles of range. 

The suspension includes MacPherson struts in the front and a multilink setup in the rear, with stabilizer bars at each end. Brakes feature regeneration to help recharge the battery during braking or deceleration, along with 12-inch front and 11-inch rear disc brakes for strong stopping power. 

Exterior 

All Prius models have a stunning exterior with a radically angled windshield leading into a beautifully curved roofline extending to the rear of the car. Hidden rear door handles give the car a coupe-like appearance. A slit of a grille is flanked by narrow headlights combined with daytime running lights in a reverse arrowhead shape. At the rear, the Prius retains its practical hatch, making cargo easy to load and unload. Overall, everything gives the impression that the Prius is designed to slip through the air with minimal fuss, which, in fact, it does.

Interior 

The 5th-generation Prius features an attractive horizontally themed instrument panel. All models include a high-mounted “above the rim” digital driver’s information display that combines the best features of an in-dash display and head-up display. 

The Prius is designed to comfortably seat four adults and accommodate five with acceptable comfort, offering rear passengers 35.9 inches of legroom and 52.8 inches of shoulder room. Behind the rear seats, there is 20.3 cubic feet of cargo space, which can be expanded by folding down one or both sides of the 60/40 split rear seats. 

Technology 

High and center on the SE and XSE dashboard is the standard 8-inch touchscreen of the Toyota Audio Multimedia system, growing to 12.3 inches on the model line’s flagship XSE Premium grade. Also standard on the top grade is an 8-speaker JBL® Premium Audio system, including a powered subwoofer. Wireless smartphone compatibility is standard on all models, and all but the base SE grade feature Qi-compatible wireless charging for smartphones. 

Safety and Driver Assistance  

All Prius PHEV models come standard with the Star Safety System™, which includes:

Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection 

PCS w/PD will help detect a vehicle, pedestrian, or bicyclist and, in certain circumstances, give drivers an audio/visual forward-collision warning. If they don’t react promptly, the system will automatically brake. 

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control 

DRCC and the available Full-Speed Range DRCC are adaptive cruise control systems for speeds above 20 mph. They use vehicle-to-vehicle distance control to help maintain a preset distance from the vehicle ahead of you. 

Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist 

When white/yellow lane markings or certain road-edge boundary lines are detected at speeds above 32 mph, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA) is designed to issue an audio/visual lane departure warning if the vehicle moves outside of its lane without activating the turn signal. If the driver does not attempt to return to their lane, the system will provide gentle corrective steering for lane-keeping assistance. 

Lane Tracing Assist 

When Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) or available Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar DRCC is enabled, and lane markers are detected, Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) uses the lines on the road and/or preceding vehicles to provide active driving assistance and help keep the vehicle centered in its lane. 

Road Sign Assist 

Using a built-in camera, your Prius PHEV can read road signs and display them on the Multi-Information Display (MID). It can detect speed limit signs, stop signs, Do Not Enter signs, and yield signs, and then display them in the gauge cluster display. 

Automatic High Beams 

Above 21 mph, the vehicle recognizes when it is too dark outside and automatically turns on the high beams to help drivers see better. The system will deactivate the high beams once it notices headlights from oncoming traffic, taillights of vehicles in front of you, or overhead road lights.
