“Crown” may be an older name in the Toyota lineup, but “Corolla” is the longest-running nameplate for the brand in the U.S. The first Corolla was introduced here in 1968. It wasn’t a hatchback but a 2-door sedan. Overall, there have been 12 Corolla generations, with each new one improving in refinement and technology. The name has lasted longer than any other model in its class because every Corolla – which means “little crown” in Latin – has built an excellent reputation for reliability. The hatchback design is both practical and sporty.

What’s New

The FX Special Edition shifts from the sedan to the hatchback lineup in 2026. This special edition pays tribute to the iconic Corolla FX16 that debuted in 1987, which also featured a hatchback body style and was the first Toyota with a notable horsepower boost through 4-valves per cylinder (16 valves), now a standard in the industry. According to the SE, the Corolla Hatchback FX Special Edition includes a black vented sport wing for a more aggressive appearance and improved aerodynamics. The 18-inch gloss-white alloy wheels with black lug nuts create a striking visual impact. The rest of the hatchback model line remains unchanged.

Performance

The mainstream Corolla hatchback features a 2.0-liter dual overhead cam inline-4 engine with dual variable valve timing. It produces 169 horsepower at 6600 rpm and 161 lb-ft of torque at 4400 rpm. Power is delivered through a highly efficient Dynamic-Shift Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), which powers the front wheels. The hatchback has an EPA-estimated city/highway/combined mpg rating of 32/41/35. Notably, on the highway, this non-hybrid model can reach 41 mpg.

All Corolla Hatchback models come with a MacPherson strut front suspension and a stabilizer bar, along with a rear independent multi-link suspension and a stabilizer bar.  The high-performance GR Corolla is discussed separately.

Exterior

The Corolla Hatchback features an aggressive profile with a pointed nose and a sloping rear hatch. The SE comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, while the FX Edition, Nightshade, and XSE upgrade to 18-inch rims with white, bronze, and graphite finishes, respectively. Most grades offer a two-tone exterior with a black roof.

Interior

The dash features sweeping lines with soft-touch materials, and a sporty tri-spoke steering wheel welcomes the driver. All models come with the Smart Key System and push-button start. SE and Nightshade models have cloth seats with 6-way manual driver adjustment. The FX Edition offers black Touring Seats with suede inserts and orange contrast stitching. The XSE upgrades to SofTex surfaces and an 8-way power-adjustable seat. The rear hatch allows wide-open access to 17.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat, which increases significantly when one or both sides of the 60/40 split rear seat back are folded down.

Technology

The dash features sweeping lines and is topped with a sporty tri-spoke steering wheel, anchored by an 8-inch multimedia touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ compatibility come standard across the model lineup, while the FX Edition adds a wireless smartphone charging pad. The Toyota Audio Multimedia system supports dual Bluetooth® phone connectivity. The FX Special Edition and XSE include a 7-inch digital gauge cluster that can be configured in multiple ways according to the driver’s preference. 

A 30 day/3GB Wi-Fi Connect trial subscription offers 4G connectivity for up to five devices, turning the car into an AT&T Hotspot. It can also download Apple Music® and Amazon Music subscriptions to the vehicle with the Integrated Streaming service (30-day trial included). This enhances the already robust audio playback capabilities, which include HD Radio, USB data, and a 3-month SiriusXM trial subscription.
