In 1995, Toyota introduced something entirely new. It resembled an SUV, many of which had appeared in the previous decade. However, it featured unibody construction like most cars, whereas SUVs traditionally had truck-like body-on-frame construction. It was equipped with all-wheel drive (AWD), which could be used on pavement, and models without AWD had front-wheel drive (FWD), marking a first for SUVs. They named it the RAV4, an abbreviation for “Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive,” though the name applied to both AWD and FWD models.

With the RAV4, Toyota pioneered the crossover SUV, a vehicle category that has since dominated the industry, from sub-compacts to large three-row models. Although initially available with two or four doors, the four-door quickly gained popularity. Over its first five design generations, the RAV4 has become increasingly sophisticated, versatile, and popular. When the Camry stopped being the best-selling passenger car in the country, it was because the RAV4 took over that title, which it has held for the last eight years. Now, for 2026, Toyota has introduced the sixth-generation RAV4, which is completely redesigned.

What’s New

Everything. The exterior and interior are all completely new. Like the latest Camry, all RAV4 models now feature electrified powertrains, either hybrid or plug-in hybrid, both of which have been upgraded. The lineup has been restructured with more choices and new grades, particularly for the Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) models. A completely new software system supports the new infotainment system and is the backbone of the launch for the new Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 suite of safety and driver assistance technologies. The only thing that remains unchanged is RAV4’s core mission: to deliver comfortable, capable, and high-quality transportation for five passengers and/or cargo under all weather conditions and across various terrains. PHEV models add the possibility of EV driving for the daily routine while still being able to go long distances without the need to recharge.

Performance

The new PHEV drivetrain pairs a 2.5-liter inline-4 engine with a redesigned version of the Toyota Hybrid system to produce 320 total system horsepower, 18 hp more than the 2025 model. The system works with a continuously variable transmission and sends power to all four wheels, as all PHEV models have AWD. The manufacturer’s estimated all-electric driving range has increased to 50 miles, expanding the number of people who can commute round-trip on electricity alone. While most PHEVs are expected to be charged at home, XSE and Woodland grades will now support DC fast charging, allowing an increase in state of charge from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes. EPA fuel estimates are not available at this writing.

The suspension system includes MacPherson struts in the front and a multi-link setup in the rear, both tuned for better responsiveness and nimble handling while providing a smooth ride. The all-new PHEV-only GR Sport models were developed in collaboration with Toyota GAZOO Racing. It emphasizes handling, with a GR-tuned suspension and power steering, increased body rigidity, and summer tires on unique 20-inch wheels with a larger offset.

Exterior

All new RAV4 models feature a boxier look with an upward-sloping beltline and more upright rear pillars, resulting in larger rear quarter windows. The half-hexagon fender openings, accented by different levels of cladding, are still present, with both front and rear fenders bulging outward for a sturdy stance. The RAV4 will have various styles, including Core, Rugged, and Sport, which mainly differ in the front, although all PHEV models will come with either the Rugged design (Woodland) or the Sport design (SE, XSE, GR Sport).

All designs on the front feature a rectilinear variation of the “hammerhead” headlight treatment found on several Toyota passenger car models. The Rugged design divides the grille into upper and lower sections, with integrated Rigid Industries LED lighting on the lower part and a more rugged lower edge. The model also sits about half an inch higher thanks to standard All-Terrain tires, and it comes with standard raised roof rails with crossbars, along with a 1¼-inch rear activity mount for travel-ready versatility. The Sport trim on the SE and XSE models features a black single-piece grille, up to 20-inch wheels, and several two-tone exterior paint options, while the GR Sport has a unique black MATRIX grille, 20-inch wheels, and a rear spoiler.

Interior

The dash shape reflects the clean, rectilinear exterior design. All models now feature a 12.3-inch customizable digital driver’s display. Prominently positioned in the center of the dashboard is either a 10.5-inch or 12.9-inch touchscreen, depending on the grade. The lower edge of the touchscreen includes fixed HVAC controls with physical buttons and a center-mounted volume knob in the bottom frame.

There are two storage compartments where the dash meets the center console. The upper compartment is designed to hold two smartphones and is bordered by protruding controls for drive modes, including an EV-only setting. Controls for driver assistance features, traction control, and camera systems are located on the center console. Some grades include Toyota’s new shift-by-wire system, featuring a minimalist toggle switch that offers intuitive operation and adds a futuristic touch to the new RAV4.

Seating surfaces will vary from fabric on SE models to SofTex® with available colors like black, light gray, or a new Mineral shade in the Woodland. The Woodland interior also features additional elements for a lively, outdoor-inspired cabin, such as uniquely patterned perforated soft-touch door and dash panels, red-orange accents, and

standard Woodland-exclusive all-weather floor and cargo mats. The XSE grade features a combination of SofTex and Ultrasuede® seating surfaces. The GR SPORT grade seats replace Ultrasuede with a perforated BRIN•NAUB® microsuede, combined with SofTex surfaces. It also adds GR logos to the front headrests and steering wheel, along with paddle shifters and aluminum sport pedals.

Technology

The 2026 RAV4 introduces the Arene software platform, which underpins the new multimedia system. The system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It can connect two devices simultaneously via Bluetooth, allowing the driver to answer a call even while another phone or device is playing music. Whether using a smartphone or the native system, a permanent Home button always returns you to the main menu. The native Voice Assistant has been enhanced with clearer voice recognition and quicker response times. The onboard navigation system display can be viewed in the digital gauge cluster.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The new Arene software system also powers the latest Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 system. As of now, Toyota has not explained the full extent of this system, but it is expected to include all of the features from the 3.0 system, such as:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Road Sign Assist
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Proactive Driving Assist (PDA)
