2026 Toyota RAV4 vs. the Competition

After being sold in Japan for a few years, the Honda CR-V entered the U.S. market in February 1997. It is now in its sixth design generation and sits between the HR-V and the Passport in size. The CR-V has surpassed the Accord as Honda’s best-selling model and is available with conventional and hybrid drivetrains. The former features a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-4 paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The CR-V’s hybrid setup differs from the Toyota system and most others by using an electric motor for most of the propulsion, while its 2.0-liter engine primarily recharges the battery. 

• The CR-V has no plug-in hybrid model. The RAV4 PHEV has a range of 48 to 52 miles on a full charge.
• Honda places its hybrid CR-Vs at the top of its model line. That makes hybrid efficiency much more affordable on the RAV4, starting at $31,900, compared to $35,630 for the CR-V Sport Hybrid.
• With a combined power output of 226 horsepower, the RAV4 outpowers the 204-horsepower CR-V Hybrid.
• The RAV4 gets better city/highway/combined fuel mileage than the CR-V Hybrid for FWD models (47/40/43  MPG vs. 43/36/40 MPG) and AWD models (46/39/42 MPG vs. 40/34/37 MPG).
• Saving money even further, the RAV4 recommends 87 octane fuel while the CR-V recommends more expensive 91 octane.
• When comparing off-road-focused models, the RAV4 has more power and greater efficiency, along with more ground clearance (8.5 inches vs. 8.2).
• The RAV4 has a greater maximum towing capacity than the CR-V (3,500 pounds vs. 1,000).
• The CR-V has a standard 9-inch center touchscreen, with a 10.2-inch screen on higher trims. The RAV4 comes standard with a 10.5-inch screen, upgrading to 12.9 inches on higher trims.
• The standard audio system in the base RAV4 has six speakers, compared with four in the CR-V.

The Nissan Rogue debuted in 2008 and is now in its third generation. It also happens to be the best-selling Nissan model in North America. The Rogue is powered by a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine, the only powertrain offered, as the Rogue has no hybrid or plug-in hybrid models. 

• Unsurprisingly, the RAV4 offers significantly better city/highway and combined fuel economy for FWD models (47/40/43 MPG city/ highway/ combined vs. 29/36/32 MPG) and AWD models (46/39/42 MPG vs. 28/35/31 MPG).
• The Rogue has a lower starting price ($31.900 vs. $29,490), but with the RAV4 hybrid drivetrain, the price difference will likely be repaid quickly with lower fuel costs.
• The RAV4 has a significantly greater maximum towing capacity than the Rogue (3,500 vs. 1,500 pounds).
• The Rogue has a standard 8-inch center touchscreen, compared with the 10.5-inch screen that is standard on the RAV4.
• The RAV4 has standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The Rogue still requires a wired connection until you get to more costly models.
• Adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and road sign recognition are standard on the RAV4 but cost extra on the Rogue. 
• The standard audio system in the base RAV4 has six speakers compared to four in the Rogue.

The Subaru Forester was an early entrant in the compact crossover category, debuting in the 1998 model year. Today’s Forester stands out in the category with standard AWD across its model line, along with its 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, which is horizontally opposed instead of an inline configuration like many of its competitors. The Forester Hybrid is new for 2026 and is the default drivetrain in this comparison.

• There is no plug-in hybrid version of the Forester available.
• While the Forster has a lower entry price, its hybrid model has a higher starting MSRP than the RAV4 ($31,900 vs. $34,790).
• The RAV4 has more horsepower than the Forester Hybrid (226 horsepower vs 194).
• The RAV4 gets better fuel mileage than the Forester Hybrid, with the EPA estimating the RAV4 AWD at 46/39/42 MPG city/ highway/ combined, while the Forester Hybrid is rated at 35/34/35 MPG.
• While the Forester Hybrid has a standard 11.6-inch center screen compared to the standard 10.5-inch screen on the RAV4, it has been criticized as slow to respond, a non-issue on the RAV4.
• With the rear seats up, the RAV4 offers significantly more cargo space than the Forester (37.8 cubic feet vs. 29.6).
• Rear passengers will appreciate the RAV4’s rear climate control vents, which the Forester lacks.

The Hyundai Tucson debuted in 2004 as a compact alternative to the Santa Fe, which was then transitioning to a midsize platform. While the Tucson shares mechanical components with the Kia Sportage, the two models do not share any exterior or interior design elements. Currently, the Tucson is in the final year of its fourth generation, with a redesigned model expected in 2027. In addition to a conventional gas drivetrain, the Tucson offers both hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivetrains.  

• The RAV4 gets better city/highway/combined fuel mileage than the Tucson Hybrid for FWD models (47/40/43 MPG vs. 35/38/40) and AWD models (46/39/42 MPG vs. 38/38/38).
• The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid has an estimated EV-only range of 48–52 miles, compared with 32 miles for the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid. 
• When the EV range is exhausted, the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid gets 41 to 44 combined mpg, compared with 35 for the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid.
• The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid’s total operating range is estimated at 600 miles, compared with 420 miles for the Tucson Plug-in Hybrid.
• The RAV4 has significantly greater maximum towing capacity than the Tucson (3,500 pounds vs. 2,000).
• Driver-side knee airbags are standard on the RAV4 but not available on the Tucson. 
• Cornering Brake Control is standard on the RAV4 but unavailable on the Tucson. 
• Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on the RAV4 but require an upgrade on the Tucson.
• The RAV4’s predicted resale value is significantly higher than the Tucson’s. After five years and 60,000 miles, a well-maintained RAV4 can retain 64.5% of its value on average, compared with 55.4% for the Tucson.
