2026 Toyota Tundra vs. the Competition

The Chevrolet Silverado is the second best-selling vehicle in the US. Sales of over half a million a year enable a broad model line with three cab sizes and four engine choices. There are nine trim levels, from the basic WT (Work Truck) to the plush High Country to the ZR2, an off-road-focused competitor to the Tundra TRD Pro. The Silverado shares almost all mechanical components with the GMC Sierra 1500, and the latest design for both models launched in the 2019 model year. This is the last year for the current design, with a redesigned model for both Chevrolet and GMC expected for the 2027 model year. The Tundra SR5 CrewMax 4×2 and Silverado 1500 LT Crew Cab 4×2 both have MSRPs a little over and under $50K and will be the default base of comparison unless otherwise specified.

• The Tundra SR5’s 389-hp 3.4-liter V6 has significantly more power than the Silverado LT’s base engine, a 2.7-liter turbo I-4 (310 hp).
• On all but the base SR, the Tundra’s stock engine also has more torque (479 lb-ft) than the base Silverado 2.7L engine (430 lb-ft), the optional 5.3 V8 (383 lb-ft), and the optional 6.2L V8 (420 lb-ft), falling short only of the optional Silverado 1500’s optional Duramax diesel inline-6 (495 lb-ft). 
• The Silverado has no hybrid drivetrain option.
• The Tundra i-FORCE MAX hybrid drivetrain produces more torque at 583 @ 2400 rpm than the Silverado Diesel engine at 495 @ 2,750 rpm.
• A 10-speed automatic is standard on all Tundra models compared to the standard 8-speed transmission on the Silverado. A 10-speed automatic is available on upper trim levels of the Silverado. 
• Despite greater power, the Tundra i-Force twin-turbo 3.4-liter V-6 gets slightly better fuel mileage than the Silverado’s turbocharged 2.7-liter inline-4 (18/23/20 vs. 18/21/19). 
• The i-FORCE engine also gets better fuel mileage than the Silverado’s less powerful 5.3-liter V-8 (18/23/20 MPG city/ highway/ combined vs. 16/21/18 MPG).
• With the large cabin/ short-bed configurations, the Tundra has an almost foot longer wheelbase for a more stable highway ride (13’1” vs. 12’3”).
• The ground clearance on the base Tundra models is notably higher than that on the base Silverado models (9.3 inches vs. 7.9). 
• The Tundra Crew Cab earned a 2026 TOP SAFETY PICK from IIHS, its highest designation. The Silverado did not receive any accolades from IIHS and actually received a poor rating in its Moderate Overlap Front impact test.
• The Tundra comes with 2 years / 25K miles of complementary maintenance instead of 1 year / 12K miles for the Silverado.

Dodge pickup trucks have been around for over a century. The Ram name first appeared in 1989, and when the truck division separated from Dodge in 2010, the division was named RAM, and the 1500 name was introduced to designate the light-duty equivalent of the F-150, Silverado, and Tundra.  A 3.6-liter normally aspirated V-6 as the base engine. Once heavily invested in Hemi V8s, the 1500 line has transitioned to a “Hurricane” 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 cylinder engine, though a 5.7-liter Hemi engine reappeared for 2026, and for who care nothing for fuel efficiency, there is once again a 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 in select high-performance models. Ram 1500 models are available with a Quad Cab featuring short rear doors and a Crew Cab with four standard-sized doors. Cargo beds are offered in lengths of 5’7” and 6’4”. There are eight trim levels, starting with the basic Express, and culminating with the Tungsten, the flagship of the model line. 

• The Tundra’s base 3.4-liter turbocharged V-6 in the SR model has 348 horsepower, compared to 305 from the normally aspirated 3.6-liter V-6 in the Ram 1500.
• The difference in torque is even more significant: The SR-5 engine produces 405 lb-ft @2000 rpm, compared to 269 lb-ft @ 4900 rpm for the Ram 1500 V6.
• The available Ram 1500 Hurricane engine has more horsepower than the Tundra i-FORCE engine (389 vs. 420), but the Toyota engine has more lb-ft of torque (479 lb-ft vs. 469).
• Toward the upper end of the model line, the Ram 1500 Hurricane H.O. (High Output) has more horsepower than the Tundra’s i-FORCE MAX hybrid engine (437 vs. 540) but less peak torque (583 lb-ft vs. 521).
• The Tundra model line has a 10-speed transmission vs. an 8-speed automatic for all Ram 1500 models.
• The Tundra’s fuel capacity is significantly greater than that of the Ram 1500 (36 gallons vs. 26 for a possible range of 756 miles vs. 572 for the Ram 1500), which is the highest possible range for each model line.
• Among the non-off-road-focused models, the Tundra has significantly greater ground clearance than the Ram 1500 (9.3 inches vs. 7.7).
• The base towing capacity of the Tundra is 8,300 pounds compared to 8,130 pounds for the Ram 1500.
• The Tundra can tow a maximum of 12,000 pounds vs. the 11,320-pound maximum towing capacity of the Ram 1500.

The Ford F-150 has the distinction of being the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. for the past 43 years. With sales of over 750,000 models per year, the F-150 has a broad model line with Regular Cab, SuperCab, and SuperCrew® cabs, six different internal combustion engine choices, including the only other hybrid drivetrain in the category besides the Tundra i-FORCE MAX. The F-150 also has eight trim levels, from the basic XL to the Tundra TRD Pro competing Raptor to the luxurious Platinum, which would compete against the Tundra Capstone.

Unless otherwise specified, all dimensional comparisons will be between the Tundra SR5 4×2 and the F-150 XLT 4×2, both with the full-size 4-door cab and smaller cargo bed, which is the most popular configuration for all full-size pickup truck models. 

• When comparing XL and SR5 base engines, the Tundra produces 389 horsepower compared to 325 for the F-150 XL with the standard 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6.
• Also, when comparing these two engines, the Tundra produces 479 lb-ft of torque compared to 400 for the F-150.
• The Tundra SR5’s i-FORCE engine slightly trails the F-150’s optional 5.0-liter V-8 in horsepower (389 horsepower vs. 400) but significantly exceeds its torque (479 lb-ft vs. 410).
• When comparing the hybrid engine, the Tundra’s i-FORCE MAX 3.4-liter V6 hybrid system exceeds the F-150’s 3.5-liter V6 hybrid system in horsepower (437 horsepower vs. 430) and torque (583 lb-ft @2400 rpm vs. 570 @3000 rpm).
• Looking at the price-comparable Tundra SR5 and F-150 XLT 4×2 models, the Tundra has a higher maximum payload. (1830 lbs. vs. 1685).
• The Tundra earned a 2026 TOP SAFETY PICK from the IIHS, while the F-150 earned no such designation and rated “Poor” in the Moderate Overlap front impact test.
• All Tundra models have adaptive cruise control, which is not available on base F-150 models.
• All Tundra models have keyless start, which is not standard on base F-150 models. 
• Air conditioning is standard on both trucks, but only the Tundra has automatic climate control on all models. 
• The Tundra CrewMax Cab comes standard with rear climate control vents, while the Ford F-150 Super Crew cab does not.
• Dual front knee airbags are standard on all Tundra models, but are not available on any F-150.
