Performance

The front-wheel-drive (FWD) bZ4X is powered by a single 150-kW (201-horsepower) motor up front which draws juice from a 71.4-kWh lithium-ion battery. Range is EPA-estimated to be 252 miles for the XLE and 236 miles for the Limited. The all-wheel-drive (AWD) drivetrain has a slightly larger 72.8-kW battery that feeds one 80-kW (107-hp) motor up front and another 80-kW motor between the rear wheels. All told, the dual-motor driveline puts down 214 combined horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. Range for the dual-motor driveline is an estimated 228 miles for the XLE and 222 miles for the Limited.

AWD models feature X-MODE with Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud settings. Snow/Dirt helps you tackle slippery and uneven surfaces, while the Deep Snow/Mud setting helps enhance vehicle stability in soft surfaces by allowing the tires to slip in a way that clears away snow or mud.

With a Level 2 charger, the bZ4X can go from low battery to a 100% state of charge in about 9.5 hours. For fast DC-direct charging, an AWD bZ4X can receive 150 kW and go from low battery to 80% charge in about an hour, with a rate of about 3 miles per minute. The FWD model is about twice as fast, with a charge rate of about 6 miles per minute, or up to 80% in about 30 minutes.

The bZ4X can also charge from a simple 110-volt wall socket at about 4 miles per hour. If you have a 30-40 mile round-trip commute, you could replenish your range from an overnight charge.

Exterior

The bZ4X is not an electric RAV4, but you can certainly see a family resemblance in its profile, with similar proportions and a very familiar D-pillar design. Without an engine to cool, the traditional front grille gives way to a small lower intake and narrow opening between the LED headlight clusters. The gloss-black front fender cladding extends to encompass those headlights and forms a three-sided cradle around the front-end styling. An echo of this effect can be seen in the black trim that extends from the taillights. Sweeping character lines across the side give a muscularity to the side profile. The XLE features 18-inch alloy wheels, while the Nightshade rides on 20-inch black-finished alloy wheels, and the Limited wears 20-inch machine-finished alloys.

Interior

Toyota brought its innovative thinking to the interior. The driver information display is digital and is viewed above the upper rim of the steering wheel (instead of below), so it effectively doubles as a head-up display. The standard 12.3-inch center display and other controls are within a panel that curves upward from the center console. The console itself is a bridge over a convenient storage space. An electronic drive selector knob opens the area between the driver and front passenger for a covered space for the standard Qi-compatible wireless phone charger. Elegant piano-black and satin finish trim are found throughout. Sound-proofing glass and other wind-noise reduction features combine with the silent motors to create a hushed cabin at highway speeds.

Technology

The Toyota system enables dual Bluetooth phone connectivity, and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto can be brought up on the 12.3-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia display screen wirelessly. With further connectivity, the bZ4X has an available Wi-Fi Connect subscription (30 days or up to 3 gigabytes) that offers 4G connectivity for up to five devices. Wi-Fi Connect also enables the new Integrated Streaming feature, providing the ability to link separate Apple Music and Amazon Music subscriptions to the vehicle for onboard control. Dual-zone climate control is standard on both grades. Available on the Limited is a nine-speaker JBL Premium Audio system with a powered subwoofer.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The bZ4X earned an overall 5-star rating from the NHTSA and also achieved a “Good” in all IIHS crash tests (the highest rating). Both grades come with the latest version of Toyota Safety Sense (3.0), a suite of safety, driver awareness, and driver assistance technologies that includes:

The Limited adds the convenience of Panoramic View Monitor, a multi-camera system that can display a 360-degree view around the vehicle on the center display. Also, the Limited now comes standard with Traffic Jam Assist capability, Lane Change Assist, and Front Cross-Traffic Alert.
