Performance

There are three powertrains in the Corolla model line, including the conventional gas-powered powertrain, the electrified drivetrain for the hybrid models, and the high-performance turbocharged engine in the GR Corolla. The engine found in the gas-powered sedans and non-GR hatchback is a 2.0-liter dual overhead cam inline-4 with dual variable valve timing. It produces 169 horsepower @ 6600 rpm and 161 lb-ft of torque @ 4400 rpm. Power is controlled by an efficient Dynamic-Shift Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), which drives the front wheels. Most sedan and hatchback models have an EPA-estimated city/highway/combined mpg rating of 21 / 41 / 35. It is worth repeating that on the highway, this non-hybrid model can achieve 41 mpg. 

The hybrid sedans feature a 1.8-liter DOHC inline-4 combined with an electric motor with a total system power of 138 horsepower and 156 lb-ft of torque. It is also paired with a CVT, sending power to either the front or all four wheels. EPA mpg ratings can vary by grade but can be as high as 53 / 46 / 50 for FWD models and 51 / 44 / 48 for AWD models.

All Corolla models have a Macpherson strut front suspension with a stabilizer bar. The LE has a torsion beam rear suspension, while all other grades except the GR have an independent multi-link rear suspension with a stabilizer bar. 

The GR Corolla comes strictly in hatchback form and features a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-3 capable of a maximum boost of 25.2 psi. It is rated at 300 horsepower @ 6,500 rpm with 273 lb-ft of torque at 3000 – 5500 rpm. All models feature a 6-speed manual transmission with rev-matching which then sends power to all four wheels. Front / rear distribution of torque can be set by the driver for 60:40, 30:70 or the Track setting of 50:50. More details on the GR Corolla are found in the grade listings below.

Exterior

The Corolla sedan adopted the aggressive front-end styling that first appeared on the hatchback which features headlights blending into a low-profile upper grill with a larger intake below. Blacked out pillars define bring a single head-to-tail shape to the side windows above a high lower body. Body-color mirror caps and door handles give both the sedan and hatchback a refined look. The Nightshade grade stands out with a sport mesh grille, black trim & badging, and 18-in bronze-finished alloy wheels. All models are available in the same eight exterior colors, which include:

Interior and Technology

The dash features sweeping lines and is fronted by a sporty tri-spoke steering wheel and anchored by an 8-inch multimedia touchscreen which features standard wireless Apple CarPlay® & Android Auto™ compatibility. Automatic climate control power windows and locks and Smart Key system are among standard features.
