Performance 

With a 2.4-liter Boxer 4-cylinder engine, the Toyota GT86 produces 228 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. And what it does with that power and torque is mightier than what most people would believe. Thanks in part to its weight of just 2,838 lbs when equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission, or 2,862 lbs with the available 6-speed automatic, the GT86 can get from 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds with the manual and 6.1 seconds with the automatic, according to Car and Driver. 

The handling of the GT86 is unlike most sports cars built today. It is lively, fun, and most importantly, engaging.  

2024 sees the introduction of a new, special model in the 86 lineup, the GT86 Trueno Edition, which adds Sachs dampers, Brembo brakes with rotors that are 1.2 inches larger in the front and 1-inch in the rear, 4-piston front and 2-piston rear calipers, and a special vinyl decal kit. Toyota says they will make only 860 of these models to celebrate the classic AE86 that was made most famous by the anime film, Initial D.  

Toyota won’t let the Trueno Edition have all the fun, though, as they are offering the suspension and brake upgrades to all GT86 owners of 2022 to current cars. Keep in mind, to fit the larger brakes your vehicle has to have 18” wheels.  

Exterior 

The exterior of the GT86 has been specially designed to be both attractive and aerodynamically functional. Car enthusiasts will tell you that a truly beautiful car is one that you look back at even as you’re walking away, and the GT86 is 100% that type of sports car. The design is purposeful, but also elegant while maintaining an aggressive stance. Available 9-spoke 18-inch matte black wheels further the ready to hit the track look of the rest of the car. 

All models feature LED headlights with LED daytime running lights.  

Interior 

Everything inside of the GT86 is meant to focus on the driver’s needs, such as the leather trimmed steering wheel, parking brake, seats, and shifter. Aluminum pedals round out the sporting features.  

Standard dual-zone climate control with genuine knobs and buttons give the driver and passenger full control without having to dig into menus in the touchscreen display.  

There are two extra seats for rear passengers that can also be folded to give even more cargo space.  

Technology 

The 2024 Toyota GR86 gives drivers plenty to love when looking forward at the digital instrument gauge cluster that puts the tachometer front and center with the speedo in the middle to know exactly what you are doing. To the left of the tach is a G-meter and to the right wll show fuel range, vehicle temperatures and such.  

A standard 8-inch touchscreen display features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and with the available 8-speaker sound system you will hear every word and musical note clear as day. Buyers can further add a 10-inch, 200-watt subwoofer.  

Safety 

All GR86 models come equipped with Pre-Collision Braking System, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Blind Spot Detection (BSD), Adaptive Cruise Control, Lead Vehicle Start Alert, Lane Departure Warning with Sway Warning, and Automatic High Beams. GR86 models equipped with an Automatic Transmission also come with Rear Parking Sonar with Reverse Automatic Braking.  

The GR86 also has 7 airbags and adaptive headlights that turn with the front wheels to give optimal visibility at night.
