The Prius was the world’s first mass-produced gasoline-electric hybrid car, but it was sold only in Japan for three years before it came to the US. By the time it made the US shore in 2000, The 2-seater Honda Insight had beaten it as the first hybrid sold in the US, but the Prius was the first hybrid that mattered. That is because as a small 4-door sedan positioned between the Corolla and Camry, the Prius was as useful as it was efficient and showed the country that hybrids were real cars, not some commercial science experiment. It was the 2003 2nd generation Prius that upped the model’s usefulness and really got the ball rolling. With its 4-door hatch body, it showed the Prius could not only be a typical car, but it could also actually be a household’s only car.
While Prius models have always had a distinctive appearance, one would be hard-pressed to call them pretty. That all changed with this current generation Prius. This model is low, wide, and quite sleek, with a deeply angled windshield as part of a single sweeping silhouette curve from front to back. Power is up while efficiency is retained.
