Performance

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV, which stands for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) starts with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder Dynamic Force Engine with dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) and variable valve timing, which produces 150 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque. The Toyota Hybrid system combines this with a 161-horsepower motor (120kW) drawing power stored in a 13.6 kWh battery. The system is controlled through a continuously variable transmission and drives the front wheels. Combined horsepower is 220, which is quite robust for a car of the Prius’ size.

The Prius PHEV can be charged overnight with a conventional household plug. No Level 2 charging installation is necessary. Fully charged, the Prius Hybrid PHEV can operate for an estimated 44 miles on the SE grade from stored electricity alone. For the XSE grades, the range is estimated at 40 miles. If your commute or daily drive routine is under these distances, the Prius PHEV can operate as an efficient electric vehicle for days and weeks until you have a longer drive. This saves money, as the electric operation is much less expensive than gasoline. The Prius PHEV is estimated to have MPGe (energy equivalent of gasoline) of 114 and 127, depending on the grade.

When you take a more extended trip, there is no need to be concerned about recharging. When the Prius PHEV runs out of EV range, it simply continues as a hybrid. Together with its slippery exterior shape, it delivers 48 – 52 combined mpg depending on grade. You can also choose how your Prius PHEV operates. If you are on a long trip but enjoy EV operation in the city, you can select Hybrid operation for the highway and save the EV miles for later. Overall, with a full charge and a full tank, you get an approximate 550 to 600 miles of range.

The suspension features MacPherson struts up front and a multilink arrangement in the rear, each with stabilizer bars at both ends. Brakes feature regeneration to supplement the battery when braking or decelerating with additional 12-inch front and 11-inch rear disc brakes for hard stopping.

Exterior  

All Prius models have a stunning exterior with a radically angled windshield leading into a beautifully curved roofline extending to the rear of the car. Hidden rear door handles give the car a coupe-like appearance. A slit of a grille is flanked by narrow headlights combined with daytime running lights in a reverse arrowhead shape. The Corolla and Camry have since adopted this same look. At the rear, the Prius retains its practical hatch, making cargo easy to load and unload. Overall, everything gives the appearance that the Prius is meant to slip through the air with a minimum of fuss, which, in fact, it is.

Interior

The 5th-generation Prius features an attractive horizontally themed instrument panel with a high-mounted 8-inch multimedia touchscreen and a 12.3-inch screen, which is available or standard on the XSE Premium. All models feature a high-mounted “above the rim” digital driver’s information display that combines the best elements of an in-dash display and head-up display.

The Prius is designed to seat four adults comfortably and five in acceptable comfort, with rear passengers enjoying 35.9 inches of legroom and 52.8 inches of shoulder room. Behind the rear seats is 20.3 cubic feet of cargo space, which, of course, can be expended by lowering one or both sides of the 60/40 split-rear seats

Technology

High and center on the SE and XSE dashboard is the standard 8-inch touchscreen of the Toyota Audio Multimedia system. Also standard on the top grade is an 8-speaker JBL® Premium Audio system, including a powered subwoofer. Wireless smartphone compatibility is standard on all models, and all but the base SE grade feature Qi-compatible wireless smartphone charging.

Safety and Driver Assistance

The 2025 Prius PHEV received a 5-star Overall Rating from the NHTSA. Though the 2025 Prius PHEV has not yet been rated by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), the structurally identical 2024 model was designated a TOP SAFETY PICK. All Prius PHEV models come standard with the Star Safety System™, which includes:

Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection

PCS w/PD will help detect a vehicle, pedestrian, or bicyclist and, in certain circumstances, give drivers an audio/visual forward-collision warning. If they don’t react promptly, the system will automatically brake.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control

DRCC and the available Full-Speed Range DRCC are adaptive cruise control systems for speeds above 20 mph. They use vehicle-to-vehicle distance control to help maintain a preset distance from the vehicle ahead of you.

Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist

When white/yellow lane markings or certain road-edge boundary lines are detected at speeds above 32 mph, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA) is designed to issue an audio/visual lane departure warning if the vehicle moves outside of its lane without activating the turn signal. If the driver does not attempt to return to its lane, the system will provide gentle corrective steering for lane-keeping assistance.

Lane Tracing Assist

When Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) or available Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar DRCC is enabled, and lane markers are detected, Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) uses the lines on the road and/or preceding vehicles to provide active driving assistance and help keep the vehicle centered in its lane.

Road Sign Assist

Using a built-in camera, your Highlander can read road signs and display them on the Multi-Information Display (MID). It can detect speed limit signs, stop signs, Do Not Enter signs, and yield signs and then display them in the gauge cluster display.

Automatic High Beams

Above 21 mph, the vehicle recognizes when it is too dark outside and automatically turns on the high beams to help drivers see better. The system will deactivate the high beams once it notices headlights from oncoming traffic, taillights of vehicles in front of you, or overhead road lights.
