Performance
The RAV4 Hybrid starts with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder Dynamic Force Engine with dual overhead camshafts (DOHC) and variable valve timing, which produces 177 horsepower and 165 lb-ft of torque. The Toyota Hybrid system combines this with a 179-horsepower motor in the front and a 53-hp motor in the rear (134/40 kW), drawing power stored in an 18.1 kWh battery for 302 horsepower. The rear motor enables an Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive, and the system is paired with an electronically controlled continuous variable transmission that includes sequential shift modes.
The RAV4 PHEV can be charged overnight with a conventional household plug. No Level 2 charging installation is necessary. Fully charged, the RAV4 Hybrid PHEV can operate for an estimated 42 miles from stored electricity alone. This means if your commute or daily drive routine is under 42 miles, the RAV4 PHEV can operate as an efficient electric vehicle for days and even weeks until you have a longer drive. This saves money, as is the efficiency of electric driving, and the RAV4 hybrid is rated as having 94 MPGe (gas energy equivalent) in its electric mode.
When you take a more extended trip, there is no need to be concerned about recharging. When the RAV4 PHEV runs out of EV range, it simply operates as a standard gas engine with 38 combined mpg. In addition, you get an approximate 600 miles of range with a full charge and a full tank.
The suspension features MacPherson struts up front and a multilink arrangement in the rear, each with stabilizer bars. Standard ground clearance is 8.0 inches for the SE and 8.2 inches for the XSE.
Exterior
The RAV Hybrid exterior combines a straight-edged profile with rugged truck-like front-end styling that looks aggressive on the street and trail. SE grade rides on 18-inch alloy wheels with 19-inch wheels on the XSE. The SE features monotone color exteriors with color choices including:
- Ice Cap
- Silver Sky Metallic
- Magnetic Gray Metallic
- Midnight Black Metallic
- Blueprint
- Supersonic Red
All XSE grades feature a two-tone exterior with a Midnight Black Metallic roof. Its available colors are:
- Supersonic Red / Black Metallic
- Silver Sky Metallic / Midnight Black Metallic
- Blueprint / Midnight Black Metallic
- Magnetic Gray Metallic / Midnight Black Metallic
- Wind Chill Pearl / Midnight Black Metallic
Interior
The RAV4 dashboard is purposely uncluttered, with a bright pewter-finish trim defining key areas. The SE features fabric seats with red stitching and embossed inserts, with the XSE upgrading to SofTex leather-like surfaces. An 8-way power adjustable driver seat, Ambient lighting, wireless phone charging, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a panoramic sunroof, among other niceties, are available as you climb up the grade hierarchy or add packages.
There is 101.3 cubic feet of passenger space, or 98.9 with the optional moonroof. Rear passengers enjoy 37.8 inches of legroom. Behind the rear passengers, there is 33.4 cubic feet of cargo space, which can expand to 63.1 cubic feet if there are no rear passengers.
Technology
High and center on the SE dashboard is the standard 8-inch touchscreen of the Toyota Audio Multimedia system, which grows to 10.5 inches on the XSE grade and also features a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster with customizable settings. The XSE also has an 11-speaker JBL® Premium Audio system, including a subwoofer and amplifier. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration is standard across the model line, as are convenience features like a digital speedometer, a 7-inch digital Multi-Information Display, and a Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS) with individual tire readout.
Safety and Driver Assistance
The 2025 RAV4 Hybrid received a 5-star Overall Rating from the NHTSA. Though the 2025 RAV4 PHEV has not yet been rated by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), the structurally identical 2024 model was designated a TOP SAFETY PICK. All RAV4 Hybrid models come standard with the Star Safety Systemâ„¢, which includes:
- Vehicle Stability Control
- Traction Control
- Anti-lock Brake System
- Electronic Brake-force Distribution
- Brake Assist
- Smart Stop Technology®
Also standard on every RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid is the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 suite of safety and driver assistance technologies, which includes:
Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
PCS w/PD will help detect a vehicle, pedestrian, or bicyclist and, in certain circumstances, give drivers an audio/visual forward-collision warning. If they don’t react promptly, the system will automatically brake.
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
DRCC and the available Full-Speed Range DRCC are adaptive cruise control systems for speeds above 20 mph. They use vehicle-to-vehicle distance control to help maintain a preset distance from the vehicle ahead of you.
Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
When white/yellow lane markings or certain road-edge boundary lines are detected at speeds above 32 mph, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA) is designed to issue an audio/visual lane departure warning if the vehicle moves outside of its lane without activating the turn signal. If the driver does not attempt to return to its lane, the system will provide gentle corrective steering for lane-keeping assistance.
Lane Tracing Assist
When Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) or available Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar DRCC is enabled, and lane markers are detected, Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) uses the lines on the road and/or preceding vehicles to provide active driving assistance and help keep the vehicle centered in its lane.
Road Sign Assist
Using a built-in camera, your Highlander can read road signs and display them on the Multi-Information Display (MID). It can detect speed limit signs, stop signs, Do Not Enter signs, and yield signs and then display them in the gauge cluster display.
Automatic High Beams
Above 21 mph, the vehicle recognizes when it is too dark outside and automatically turns on the high beams to help drivers see better. The system will deactivate the high beams once it notices headlights from oncoming traffic, taillights of vehicles in front of you, or overhead road lights.
Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
Vehicles commonly ride in your blind spots when you drive. The Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) displays an orange icon in the side mirrors when a vehicle drives into the blind spot. When reversing, the Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) helps detect vehicles approaching from either side, warning you with side mirror indicators and a warning tone.
